This weekend James Mureithi was found dead in Mathare slum which surrounds the rubbish dump where our Nairobi project is. He was shot twice by a police officer for breaking the Covid-19 curfew but James was a homeless man who worked on the landfill to collect recyclables to sell. He had no home to go to. This is not an isolated case and at least 15 others, all from low income backgrounds, have been killed by police in Kenya for breaking curfew. This case echos many cases of police brutality which we are witnessing across the world, and in the last week in America with George Floyd’s death. We must also raise awareness of police brutality globally, in areas not discussed by the media. We are also further reminded of the privilege many of us have to have a safe place to isolate from Covid-19 in. #jamesmureithi #georgefloyd

Masitula is the cook on our Masaka project, currently providing three meals a day for all the children and staff quarantining at the centre. Cooking healthy and nutrient rich food for the children during this time is essential to ensuring they stay fit and well. 💙👣 #thanks #cooking #healthy #smallsteps #landfill ...

We’re excited for our centres to be full of happy children again when it is safe to do so, but for now happy that they are safe places for vulnerable children. Those who are isolating at our Masaka centre are still receiving lessons whilst those at home are getting weekly education packs to help keep them on track. We look forward to the day they are learning, singing, playing and dancing together 👣💙 📸 @ralph_h_lawson

We’re so proud of all our in country staff! Many of the staff are working 24/7 to ensure that the children are kept safe and well. But on top of all that they design fun games and activities to keep the children happy. The children have loved planting and gardening, making the centre look great. We could not do our work without them. 👣💙 #thanks #grateful #hardwork #landfill #smallsteps ...

As you may have seen in the background of our photos recently, before the lockdown we did some decorating of the Masaka building. In the activity children painted their hands and feet to brightly decorate the centre. We also used the activity to teach children about germs and the importance of washing hands. This building is providing a safe place to vulnerable children throughout this crisis, bringing smiles and happiness 👣💙 #painting #art #germs #happy #safety #landfill #smallsteps ...

As many countries start to come out of confinement, we need to look at what we have learnt and ask ourselves: do we want return to a work of waste, pollution and inequality? Or is it time to live in a kinder world, respecting nature and those who contribute to the world rather than take from it?
We are really looking forward to the release of #thestoryofplastic by our friends @storyofstuff .
