A group of our most vulnerable children and key staff are isolating at our centre. Although they have extremely limited contact with the rest of the town they are still strict with their hygiene and health practices to ensure to safety of all staff and children 👣💙 #washyourhands #stayathome #landfill #smallsteps ...

In the absence of masks our kids in Kenya are wearing bandanas they made, while practicing #socialdistancing by spreading their arms like birds everywhere they walk. In the slums of Ngong and on the dump site. If these 7 year olds can help #flattenthecurve so can you.

Over the last 2 years we introduced additional WASH (water, sanitation & hygiene) programmes to all our children’s centres. Giving children access to clean water in #Romania #Cambodia #Laos #Kenya & #uganda. Last year our UK office went remote so it’s business as usual here at #smallstepsproject we are used to tackling crisis and we will continue to fight for the basic human rights for children living on landfill. Hopefully when the world recovers it will do so having gained a greater sense of empathy for those who’s daily life is a struggle against disease & getting what they need to survive.

‘Social distancing is a privilege. It means you live in a house large enough to practise it. Hand washing is a privilege too. It means you have access to running water. Hand sanitisers are a privilege. It means you have money to buy them. Lockdowns are a privilege. It means you can afford to be at home. Most of the ways to ward the Corona off are accessible only to the affluent. In essence, a disease that was spread by the rich as they flew around the globe will now kill millions of the poor. All of us who are practising social distancing and have imposed a lockdown on ourselves must appreciate how privileged we are. Many people won’t be able to do any of this.’ #smallstepsproject #livekindly #landfill #children #rubbishdump #charity #equality #socialdistancing #solidarity #refugeeswelcome #refugeecamp #gaza #freepalestine #bethechangeyouwanttosee ...

Coronavirus update: In Uganda and Kenya, the locations of our current active projects, there has now been confirmed cases of Coronavirus, 9 and 25 cases respectively.
Both projects have now temporarily closed to all but the most vulnerable children we support. In Uganda those who are not safe to remain at home are staying at the centre with a few key staff members. Whilst the remaining staff carry out outreach on the other children to ensure they remain safe. In Kenya food and shelter is being provided again for only the most vulnerable. All staff, including those not working at this time continue to be on full pay. We are continuing to ensure both projects maintain good hygiene practices and have the supplies needed to keep safe during this time.👣💙

SSP knows the importance of teaching children not only in the classroom but also life skills. The children in Masaka love being involved in the planting, watering and harvesting of the fruit and vegetables. It’s great for them to see where food comes from and also forms part of a healthy diet. 👣💙 #harvesting #gardening #planting #farming #smallsteps #children #landfill ...

A bit of #mondaymotivation for you! Everyone needs something to smile about today, watch until the end 🥬. Luckily just before all this madness started we had a good harvest of vegetables that were grown thanks to you guys buying our Christmas gift cards! These vegetables and now providing vital nutrients to those most in need to keep them healthy. The staff in Uganda have found food prices have skyrocketed as the open markets have been closed, so by growing our own food we are making this project more sustainable. 👣💙 #smallsteps #washyourhands #landfill #gardening #stayathome ...

As Coronavirus sweeps the world, sadly a number of countries where Small Steps has landfill intervention projects, including #India, #Romania, #Cambodia and #Kenya, are dealing with cases of coronavirus. In Kenya, where we currently have an active project supporting over 100 kids from the slums and dump of Ngong on the outskirts of Nairobi, we will continue to provide our feeding program to vulnerable children who are in need.

We have increased hygiene practices and are very thankful that over the last few months we invested in new water and sanitation facilities #WASH

Fortunately a number of the countries where SSP works on landfill including, #Laos, #Nicaragua, #timorleste and #Uganda (currently our largest project) so far have not been hit by the virus. However, we are monitoring the situation closely.

Health and hygiene has always been at the forefront of our projects and this is continuing throughout the #corona crisis with regular hand washing, showers, washing clothes of our beneficiaries and staff and taking temperatures. SSP centres have always strived to be a safe haven for our beneficiaries and we are doing all we can to maintain this 👣💙 #coronavirus #health #hygiene #landfill #charity #smallsteps #lovenotlandfill
