These happy children are giving us #fridayfeels Food and nutrition is vital for the children on landfills so it is vital that we are continue to provide food to all our beneficiaries, even if sadly our playground behind them has to be closed. Luckily with our own garden we have been able to grow so much fruit and vegetables. This had been particularly helpful as food prices sky rocketed at the start of Covid. We will continue to provide outreach until we’re reopened by the government 💙👣 #happyfriday #smallsteps #nutrition ...

We’re so excited to soon be welcoming back all of our children to our Masaka centre as soon as we get the ok from the government. We’ve missed all the playing, singing and dancing. Remember you can still purchase one of our charity tees, worn here by some of the children and our fantastic project manager Fahad, at- https://small-steps-project.teemill.com this will help to continue the work we’re doing throughout Covid-19 👣💙 #smallsteps #charitytees @teemillstore ...

Over the last three months in lockdown around 1000 education packs have been distributed to the children in Masaka. Each month the outreach team distributes a home learning pack and picks up the previous weeks, which the teachers then mark and return the following week. This system has allowed children to keep practising basic skills taught at the centre and also given the children activities to do whilst in lockdown in Uganda. These children don’t have a tv to watch or endless toys to play with, so these little booklets can provide a break from the pressures of their daily lives. There’s also a Covid-19 message on the back to remind people of the steps they can take to reduce infection. 💙👣 #educationmatters #smallsteps ...

Big smiles at our Ngong project! The pandemic has caused job insecurity globally and for many of the families in the slums surrounding the Ngong dumpsite feeding their children is becoming increasingly difficult. Therefore, as well as delivering to our usual beneficiaries we have also increased our food program to provide for all children in the slum. Its been hard work for our staff but with the help of some of teenagers we can ensure everyone is fed. It’s great to see the smiles on their faces. 👣💙 #smallsteps #food #children #happy ...

THREE MONTHS! 24 children, 5 staff, 1 dog and a few chickens later... we are finally coming out of lockdown this week. It’s strange to think our most vulnerable kids have loved confinement. But that’s because for most of them it’s stability, consistency, food and a place to call home. At Small Steps we have never provided residential care. But when Covid showed us that some children had no homes to go to, we had to provide one. And what now? Anxiety of the virus and financial uncertainty mean many can’t return to where they slept before. So we are hoping to set up an emergency residential centre and family reunification programme.

Whilst isolating at the centre the staff have been using this time to teach the children various new life skills including cooking, cleaning, and washing clothes. Children who attend our centre do not only get academic education but we also want the children to learn other skills they need in life this is why we teach them about personal hygiene, cooking, and growing food, which the children really enjoy. These skills are really important small steps as the children grow older and become more independent. 💙👣 #lifeskills #cooking #cleaning #smallsteps ...

Fahad giving us the #fridayfeels today showing off the farming at our Masaka centre. Growing our own fruit and veg brings so many benefits to the project, teaching children and their families how to grow, providing nutrients to the children, and the excess being given to the families of the children not currently isolating at our centre. Due to lockdown these families are unable to earn money as waste pickers on the dump so we are supporting them through the distribution of food and basic necessities. When we first started working with the children in Masaka many were malnourished, we were able to treat this and want to ensure those not currently at the centre continue to get a nutritional diet. @oxfamgb has estimated that as many as 12,000 people will die a day due to Covid-19 related hunger. Factors such as loss of work and increase in food prices mean people are unable to buy food and why we are growing more than ever! 👣💙 #farmingfriday #sustainability #smallsteps #nutrition read the Oxfam article here: https://www.oxfam.org/en/research/hunger-virus-how-covid-19-fuelling-hunger-hungry-world ...

Look what everyone taking a small step can do! Working with @kombgreen @kombgreensolutions over the last year we have seen a total transformation of the #korogochoslums and #nairobiriver. Gardens, a clean river, a playground, a WASH station! Thanks to the dedication of a few individuals, a movement has been created to rehabilitate disused space. Kenyan youth are inspired and those with nothing are giving back more to their communities that those with everything. We urge the @kenyangovernment to support local initiatives and return land to the people over private developers! Reclaim neglected public space.

This is Caroline the cook on our Ngong project picking kale to feed the children. The GoGreen project grows so many of its own fruit and vegetables meaning the children get a varied and nutritional diet as well as learning to grown themselves! We’ve also made use of our recycled wall to grow things in the gaps to bring life and colour to the centre 👣💙 #GoGreen #SmallSteps #Landfill #nutrition ...

Chris and Fred have worked really hard on Dandora dump not only to provide washing facilities but also educate the community on the dangers of Covid-19. Their hard work is reducing the risk of illness for hundreds of people on Dandora dump 👣💙 #smallsteps #landfill #washyourhands ...

Look out for each other! ‘Hello my name is Sharifah.
I am 6 years old.
My fellow children from around the world I’m sending you this message from Small Steps Project, Masaka, Uganda - Wash your hands! Stay home, stay safe! Bye bye.’ A year ago all our children were on a rubbish dump. During the COVID pandemic 17 of the 70 we care for have been isolating with our team for 3 months!

We encourage all our children to look out for one another, they wanted to extend this to other children around the world 🌍

This is the Masaka landfill before our project, full of adults picking through the rubbish and children playing and helping. Without our centre and the hard work of our staff the children would all still be on the dump at risk from germs for Covid-19 and other illness’. By taking a small step off landfill and into our project they are now so much safer. 👣💙 #smallsteps #landfill #germs #washyourhands ...

Hi from #Nairobi this Friday! Our day centre has been opened for the feeding programme. We are so happy that we can resume this important work. We have a lot of hungry children at Ngong slums. Their parents are unable to scavenge on the dump site during lock down and with no means to buy or find food we are their only source. But strict social distancing procedures are in place, groups of 20 children at a time, a meter apart, wearing masks and washing their hands. Come for breakfast of porridge and fruit and for lunch we are serving up vegetables we’ve been growing at the #GoGreenClub. We serve the smallest first!

We have been setting up tippy taps and soap for those around our Masaka centre to use. We have also built them by our beneficiaries houses. This gives touch free hand washing facilities to the local people, preventing the risk of Covid-19 and other illnesses. 👣💙 #washyourhands #wearamask #smallsteps #landfill #children ...
